How do I protect my child?
To ensure that your children only access content that is suitable for children, there are three easy steps for you.
YouTube offers a setting they call Restricted Mode. Then YouTube uses its logarithms and AI to determine if the material is suitable for children. The setting is easy to do and here you can read step by step how to activate it.
An easy way to make sure your kids watch movies that are good for them is to find or make their own playlists with their favorite movies. They may have different themes such as Song and Dance, Lego or perhaps your child’s favorite fairy tale character. Here you will find a guide on how to create playlists on YouTube as well as some recommended playlists from us.
Here’s the guide to child-safe YouTube:
The setting you easily fix
You can easily set a setting on YouTube to hide movies with inappropriate content. That way you make sure your child avoids movies you don’t want them to see. This is a setting you need to make on every computer, iPad or iPhone that you want the setting to apply to.
- Select the account icon.
2. Click Restricted Mode.
3. Enable or disable restricted mode in the dialog box that pops up.
Read more on the Google support page.
2. Make your own lists
Create your own playlists where you select content with your child. After that, you can use restricted access on your iPad or iPhone to make sure the child doesn’t fall outside the playlist.
Don’t know how to enable or manage Restricted Access? No problem, follow our simple guide here.
How to create your own playlist:
1. Go to YouTube and sign in to your account, or create one if you don’t already have one (it’s free)
2. Find a movie that you want to start your playlist with
3. During the movie press Save
4. Add to playlist
5. Press Create new playlist
6. Add to playlist
Enter the name of the playlist.
Choose the level of privacy the list should have. If you select Private, no one else can find your playlist.
To access your new playlist, tap Account. There you will see all your playlists.
One tip is to create playlists with your child with different themes. Examples of good themes can be children’s songs to sing with, Dance and movement or movies with the child’s favorite storyteller.
3. Be realistic
YouTube’s restrictions are not complete. The logarithms that Google uses help a great deal but it often comes through some inappropriate content. The latest from Google’s YouTube is to release a YouTube Kids app that has two options, one where logarithms select material and another where YouTube employees themselves select and approve movies.
Always supervise your child and their child’s YouTube usage. Talk to your child and find a great way to find fun and appropriate content.
